What Is NLP?

In the early 70's in Southern California Richard Bandler a student of psychology and John Grinder a Professor of Linguistics at the University of California set about to study three top therapists of the time; Fritz Pearls (psychotherapist/gestalt therapist), Milton Erickson (hypnotherapist) and Virginia Satir (family therapist).

Their goal was to find out why some humans made powerful change quickly and how, upon understanding that they could build a model that would allow others to replicate excellence in communication and behaviour themselves.

Many people have since contributed to the field, but this is where the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) originated.

From these models came a host of techniques for accelerating human change by changing thought patterns, strategies, beliefs and decisions that previously may have been limiting.

NLP Definition

NLP is the study of the brain (neuro), how we language things internally and externally (linguistic) to produce specific behaviours (programmes).

Our belief is that all behaviours/beliefs/strategies/values and other things that determine your results (programmes) are changeable.

NLP is a collection of beliefs, which leave behind a trail of techniques and processes.

What are the Beliefs of NLP?

  • There is no failure ONLY feedback!

  • Respect for the other person's model of the world

  • You are in charge of your mind, and therefore your results

  • The meaning of communication is the response you get.

  • People have all the resources they need to succeed

  • Resistance in a client is a sign of a lack of rapport - there are no resistant clients, only inflexible communicators.

  • People are not their behaviours - accept the person; change the behaviour.

  • Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have available - every behaviour is motivated by a positive intent.

  • The map is not the territory - the words we use are not the event or the item they represent.

  • The Law of Requisite Variety - the system/person with the most flexibility of behaviour will control the system.

Essentially, NLP is the study of excellence in human communication and behaviour and how to replicate it.

It All Sounds A Bit Confusing... Can You Make it Simpler?

Think of it like this.. think of your mind as a computer, and if you want to achieve a result that your mind is capable of.. you buy software or ‘programs’ to achieve the result right?

You buy accounting software so you can do the bookkeeping, or iTunes so you can listen to music.

NLP will help you not only understand what software you currently have running... but it can give you (FOR FREE) the programs you need to achieve any outcome you desire, as your mind is software!!!

That mean’s it’s programmable!

You’ve just got to plug in the outcome you want, and then watch what happens!

HOWEVER…. Sometimes, computers get viruses don’t they…. now what would happen if you got a virus?

Let’s say like a limiting belief, an illness, negative emotions and so on? Your computer starts to go a little haywire doesn’t it?

The programs don’t work so well and you need a virus cleaner to get rid of all the crap so the computer runs smoothly again – that’s what Time Line Therapy™ and Hypnosis do

They clean out all the 'stuff' that’s preventing your new programs from working correctly so you are unlimited in what you can achieve.
