What is NLP? By Sean
Steele
|
|
Doesn’t it seem that more-than-ever we
are looking for the fastest, easiest and cheapest way to
achieve success? Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has
become renowned as a field of study devoted to doing
this, but remains one of those
I’ve-heard-of-it-but-don’t-understand-it terms in
Australia. |
So What is NLP?
Technically speaking it is the study of the
mind (neuro), how we communicate with ourselves and others
(linguistic) and how to control those processes with
volition (programming).
But what is it really? It is the study
of success and excellence and how to replicate it. It
demystifies how humans think and behave, and how they
experience the world. Put simply, it is a set of
easy-to-learn techniques that allow people to quickly and
effectively change thoughts, beliefs, behaviours and
self-imposed road-blocks to success.
Think of it like this.. think of your mind as
a computer, and if you want to do something (achieve a goal)
you buy software or applications (empowering strategies,
beliefs & values) to do that right?
For example, you buy accounting software so
you can do the bookkeeping, or iTunes so you can listen to
music.
NLP helps us understand what software we
currently have running but also turns you into a programmer,
where you can create any program you need to create any
result you want. Why? Because your mind is software and
that means it’s programmable.
If someone else is running a really great
program that’s working well, why try to re-invent the wheel
when you can borrow the program (modelling) and install it
on your computer?
Unfortunately, sometimes computers get
viruses (limiting beliefs, diseases or negative emotions)
don’t they? Or.. you are running far too many applications
at once (unruly internal dialogue) and the computer slows
down and loses it’s precision and effectiveness.
Sometimes we need a good virus cleaner or the
task manager to either restore the programs to a good
working state, or to close down the ones that are adding
little value to free up some memory.
That way, when you’re trying to achieve an
outcome using your computer you can be free of viruses and
have all the applications you need to achieve the outcome.
Where did it come from?
The model stemmed from the work of linguist
John Grinder and psychology student and mathematician
Richard Bandler in the early 1970’s. They got together to
look at what tools, techniques and skills were being used by
the top therapists of the day to assist people in creating
rapid and lasting change in their lives.
The pair modelled the world’s foremost
Hypnotherapist (Milton Erickson), Family Therapist (Virginia
Satir) and Gestalt Therapist (Fritz Pearls) and broke down
into processes what was allowing their clients to achieve
such amazing results.
What are
some of the applications?
One of the resulting key applications of NLP
is the process of modelling. By studying the decisions,
beliefs, values and strategies of the most successful we can
replicate and install that model in ourselves or others,
thereby achieving similar levels of success in a much
shorter time.
For example, if you wanted to achieve
investment success like Warren Buffet then you could learn
to model the keys to his success and install that in
yourself, accelerating your investment results in the
process.
In business some applications include outcome
(goal) orientation, improved communication, effective
questioning techniques for coaching and mentoring, state
(stress) management and overcoming presentation anxiety.
Covering even wider contexts in human
interaction it offers simple skills to gain rapport quickly
with a greater variety of people, an understanding of verbal
and non-verbal communication and uncovers people’s
motivations, behaviours and self-sabotaging beliefs and
attitudes.

1)
Understand What's Important to You
Every
person on this planet has a different idea of what it means
to be successful. Self-knowledge is one common goal that
will help everyone achieve personal success. So many people
are hung up on somebody else's idea of what it means to be
successful, and they are unaware of what is truly important
to them. This is completely normal.
We all have
important role-models and influencers in our lives (think
parents and spouses) who may have basic values that are
quite different from our own. If this is the case, it's
important to recognise that the discrepancy between what we
have been taught is truly important and what we personally
believe to be truly important is due to a difference in
perspective. If we spend our time and effort trying to meet
somebody else's idea of success, and ignore or belittle any
conflicting messages from our own psyche, then we will find
ourselves exhausted and unhappy. Realising what is truly
important to us is a major step towards achieving personal
success. Try to identify what is important to you in the
context of different areas in your life: relationships,
career, spirituality, health and fitness, personal growth.
2)
Recognise Your Weaknesses Without Hiding Behind Them
While
improving our self-knowledge and realising our true goals
can be very liberating, we should not discard the rules of
the society in which we live. We must note that other
people's value systems are no less important than our own.
And we must accept that we live in a society in which
certain people and behaviours are more suited towards
particular tasks. This is the second key that will open the
door towards personal growth for you. Know yourself and your
skill set and accept that everybody is good at something and
nobody is good at everything. Write a list of things you are
good at with at least 20 things on it. Also write a list of
things you believe you aren't good at. If there is anything
on that list you want to be good at, put a plan into action
on how you will become good at it.
3) Strive
for Balance
Most of the
weaknesses associated with any given person are a result of
a limiting decision. If you ask a 5-year old if they are
good at painting, chances are they will answer yes. Ask that
same 5-year old a few years later if they are good at
painting and you are likely to have a different answer. What
happens to the belief that the 5-year old had when they
thought they were good at painting? Probably someone
somewhere told them they weren't very good at painting or
the child compared their painting to another child's or
adults and made the decision they weren't very good at
painting. With time line therapy® you can remove all
limiting decisions easily and pain free. How liberating
would it be to remove decisions such as "I can't do it" or
"I'm not very good at that"?
4) Opening
the Door
So how do
we go about understanding what's truly important to us? How
do we become balanced? How do we open that magical door that
will show us the way to personal growth and success? There
is no quickie scheme that will make you a successful person.
It will take work. Neuro-linguistic programming and time
line therapy® have tools that can help you understand your
current behaviour and what is important to you. The
techniques can eliminate any unwanted behaviours you
currently have that are holding you back from obtaining the
success you want and deserve.

Over time,
conflicts may erode the feelings of love. This technique can
help you (and your partner, if present) help you re-access
those feelings of love and romance once again.
1. Be in a
comfortable position and close your eyes.
2. Go back
to the time when you and your partner first met. What do you
see, hear and feel? Fully immerse yourself in the
experience.
3. Bring
back the feelings of joy, romance etc. Where in your body
are these feelings located? Intensify the feelings 10 times,
wherever they are. As you are just nearing the peak
intensity of the blissful experience, put your finger and
thumb together.
4. Give
yourself a 30 seconds rest.
5. Put
your finger and thumb together and see if you can evoke the
feelings. Are you satisfied with the intensity? If not
repeat steps 1-3, until you are.
6. When
you are physically with your partner, simply put your finger
and thumb together to evoke the feelings.

Values are
high level generalisations of what is important to us, what
matters to us. Most of us don't stop to think about our
values because they are so ingrained in our unconscious
thinking. Our values drive all of our behaviour. In the
context of business, let me as you one simple questions.
What is important to you in the context of your
business/career? There are literally hundreds of different
answers you could give but examples might be:
-
Freedom
-
Travel
-
Personal Growth
-
Team work
-
Money
-
Life style
-
Sustainability
-
Ecological
-
Providing value
-
Having fun/socialising
-
Authority
-
Being challenged
-
Being in charge
The list could go on. Imagine you are
the manager of a sales team and you just can't seem to
motivate your team. Your team are renumerated via basic base
salary and commission. You elicit your team's values in the
context of their jobs and discover that money is not in the
top 5 values of any of your team. The top 5 values are the
most important to us. This means, money is not important to
your team in the context of their career, therefore your
remuneration package isn't motivating your team to sell.
Values might sound all nice and fluffy
and feel like something the HR department might come up with
but let me put it another way. If you run your own business
and it isn't profitable, where is profit in your values?
Chances are profit doesn't feature in your top 5 values. Or
you are the C.E.O. and manage a team of 15 senior
executives. Twelve of your team are all on board with your
ideas and are heading in the same direction as you. Three on
the other hand have ideas of their own! I am sure that if
you elicited all of your Senior Executive team's values you
would find the twelve that are on board with you have
similar values and your three renegades have values wildly
different.
So what can be done if your values
aren't supporting the behaviour you desire?
There are numerous NLP techniques that
can alter your values hierarchy simply and quickly.

NLP Wealth
Technique 1: ANCHORING
Anchoring is an NLP technique by which you associate a
desired emotion to a particular situation (e.g., you want to
feel excited and motivated when you sit down at your
computer.)
Benefits:
-
You
can change any unwanted emotion or state in a few
moments.
-
You
can set up an anchor to use in any future situation.
NLP Wealth
Technique 2: REHEARSAL
Rehearsal is a method by which you train your brain to
expect success by rehearsing for it. It's an excellent way
to develop a healthy wealth mindset.
Benefits: You can regularly condition yourself for success
in a variety of situations.
NLP Wealth
Technique 3: MODELLING A MENTOR
A mentor serves as a guide to get you from where you are now
to where you want to be. Because a mentor, by definition,
has already developed a wealth mindset, you can use precise
questions to discover his or her strategies.
Benefits: You can create a shortcut to success by
incorporating into your own behaviour the beliefs, emotions
and methods of a mentor.
NLP Wealth
Technique 4: PHYSIOLOGY
You can use your physiology (or body posture) to change your
state instantly. Maintaining positive states of mind is
essential to creating a wealth mindset.
Benefits: You can change your state at will.
NLP Wealth
t Technique 5: VOCABULARY
Utilise the words you speak (and think) to change your life.
What you say to yourself and others will either support or
undermine your wealth mindset.
Benefits: You can train your brain to automatically focus on
success.
NLP Wealth
Technique 6: SETTING GOALS
Goals focus your mind on a specific target, thereby
enhancing the likelihood of a positive outcome. Goal-setting
is a key component of the wealth mindset.
Benefits: Once your goals are identified, your unconscious
mind will begin scanning for opportunities to attain them.

Determining Your
Target Market |
|
Point 1:
People (i.e. your potential clients) are not really
interested in you or your coaching/therapy Practice. I
know that might seem a little harsh but what people are
interested in is themselves and their own problems. If
you can help these people solve their problems you will
be of great interest to them and your coaching/therapy
Practice will be of great interest to them.
Point 2:
Most NLP Coaches and Therapists are a little wishy washy
when it comes to their Practice and many try to be
everything to all people. How many websites have you
come across where the Coach/Therapist can solve any
problem or coach anybody on anything? Wishy washy market
approach is not appealing to the market place because
the market doesn't know what to think of you.
The most successful businesses around
the globe today clearly identify who their target market
is and consistently market to their target market with clear
and concise messages. These companies come across as
being completely passionate and committed to their
target market. They also believe they are the best in
the market place at serving their target market.
Determining YOUR
Target Market
Who are you going to have as coaching
or therapy clients? Who are the specific group of people
you will focus your marketing efforts on? The more
detailed you can be in your answer to this questions,
the more success you will have in attracting them to
your Practice.
Target Market
Considerations
- Demographics (age, income level,
gender, marital status, geography of where they
live)
- Industry (educators, sales,
recruiters, health care, media, real estate)
- Position (Executives, recruitment
managers, accountants, sales people, marketing
people, small business owners, CEOs)
- Common Interest (stay-at-home-mum's, new business owners, school leavers,
retirees)
Examples of Target
Market Focus
- Children aged 7-14 who have been
labelled as having ADD/ADHD
- Stay-at-home-mum's returning to
the work force after raising their children
- Women in the 30's looking to
change their careers
- Couples who are having trouble
trying to conceive naturally with no medical
problems present
Which Target Market
is The Right Target Market for You?
- What are you passionate about?
- What industries do you have
experience in?
- What do you sound credible
talking about?
- What are you good at?
- What are people willing to pay
for?
Here is a little task that might help
you decide on the right target market for you. Fill out
each of the columns one at a time. Once complete have a
look at your lists and see where there are any possible
matches between what you are passionate about, what your
are good at and what people are willing to pay for.

Remember this important point. Your
target market doesn't need to be huge. It is far better
to have a small target market and have a service that
these people truly need than a larger target market
where only a handful of people might be interested in
your services.

What
drew you to NLP?
I have
always had a passion for inspiring and motivating people in
their lives and was looking into Life Coaching Courses when
I was advised that NLP Practitioners had more success rates
in making permanent lasting changes in their clients’ lives
by simple and fast techniques.
What are your overall impressions of your NLP Intensive
(Practitioner) Week?
It was a
week in my life like no other, to start the process of
change, to make me think outside the square of my normally
limited thinking and it opened up a wide scope of
opportunities for new ways of doing, communicating and
achieving in my life that before the course I would never
believed to have been possible.
What are your thoughts on NLP, Time Line Therapy ® and
Hypnosis?
▪
NLP
gives you a greater understanding on how to communicate with
people in all areas of your life to achieve positive
outcomes for both parties.
▪
Time Line
Therapy ®
is a wonderful simple process for healing any strong
emotions that keep us bound and can free people from what
they see as negative experiences which have held them back
by assisting them to become aware that everything that
happens to us, that we may judge as negative, has a positive
learning for our personal growth.
▪
Hypnosis
seems to move your conscious mind out of the way in order
for us to let our higher self show us who we truly are deep
inside our being and assisting us to easily and effortlessly
make positive changes to our lives.
What are you going to use your new skills to do?
I aspire to
start a coaching practice with a difference specialising in
life change coaching.
What was your favourite technique?
I had three
favourites: Changing Limiting Beliefs with the Belief Change
Script, Hierarchy of Ideas and Time Line Therapy®.
Do you feel/think differently now compared to before the
training? If so, in what way?
Before the
course I felt very limited by my circumstances. The course
has made me realise that I am the only person that can make
the positive changes in my life. To STOP waiting for someone
else to change my world and circumstances. That I am totally
responsible for every choice and decision I make. That fear
is a fallacy, doubt is self-limiting and the only way to
move forward in life is to first make a decision about where
you want to go and then take the small steps toward the
journey of bringing you to your destination and that most
importantly, the destination has no limits.
What would you say to other people thinking of studying and
training in NLP?
Don’t
hesitate to make the decision NOW to take your life from
being ordinary to extraordinary. The process is simple,
understand the human mind and how we make the choices that
we do, and you can have nothing but love and compassion for
the people that come into your life.
Any further comments?
Sean and
Anna gently encourage you to become the best person you can
be, to concentrate only on going inside yourself to find
what it is YOU want for your life, to follow the dreams you
have for yourself and that there are no limits. Humour,
passion and compassion oozes out of their presentation for
the whole 7 days and you can see first hand that the journey
towards achieving excellence and your true potential is
exciting, fun and painless!
